Box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis) is an invasive insect from East Asia that feeds exclusively on boxwood. Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has placed 13 Southeast Michigan counties under active quarantine, and Oakland County has led the state in confirmed sightings. MSU Extension has documented complete defoliation and plant death within a single season. The infestations reported through Farmington in 2024 were visible from the street.

Box Tree Moth
What Is Happening in This Area
Box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis) is an invasive insect native to East Asia that feeds exclusively on boxwood. The moth produces two to three generations per season in Southeast Michigan, and each generation feeds aggressively.
By the time most homeowners see visible damage, the infestation has already been active inside the plant canopy for some time. Early detection significantly changes the outcome.
Signs to Look For
- Green and yellow caterpillars with black stripes, found inside the plant canopy
- White silken webbing packed between branches
- Chewed or skeletonized leaves, starting from inside the plant outward
- Brown or scorched appearance as defoliation progresses
- Small dark droppings on leaves and at the base of the plant
